Trends from High Point Market, October 2013

hpm

After travelling to High Point Market in North Carolina this past month I took away several design trends that stood out in my mind. Furniture and textile design is a bit like fashion in the sense that almost everything comes back into style. Below are some design and color trends that I took away from market.

Acrylic Accents & Accessories

Acrylic, which was very popular in the 50’s and 60’s, has been appearing in everything from wall sconces to chairs to benches to tables among several other home accessories. Acrylic pieces seem to work well in small spaces because they virtually disappear. If you aren’t quite sure about an acrylic piece of furniture try starting with acrylic lamps.

Bar Carts & Cabinets

Who knew bar carts would be making a comeback? This new trend has been popping up around homes and apartments alike. Like the acrylic trend, bar carts were most popular back in the 1950s. The idea of a bar cart is a great way to display special glassware, along with making it an easy and chic way to entertain. Keep your bar cart or cabinet simple and clean in order to accentuate what you store inside!

There were monochromatic violets, blues and greens dispersed all throughout the showrooms at market. These colors were on everything from sofas to benches to upholstered headboards. These color palettes look great mixed with deep mahogany woods, grays and neutrals.

Burl Wood

Burl wood, which is a trademark of true handcrafted furniture, is highly prized in the furniture industry because of its unique grain patterns. Burl wood is actually a type of fast-growing, abnormal growth found on trees. It grows because of some sort of stress or damage that the tree has been exposed to. Throughout market, burl wood was seen on case goods such as consoles, side tables and cabinets. This beautiful type of wood really makes a piece stand out in any room.

While these trends seemed to be popular from this year’s market, it’s safe to say that they are here to stay for a while. I am excited to see what new and unique trends will be at market next April!
